Three Monroe County schools received 5-Star Climate Ratings from the state: Katherine B. Sutton Elementary School, Samuel E. Hubbard Elementary School, and Thomas G. Scott Elementary School. The School Climate Star Rating is a diagnostic tool to determine if a school is on the right path to school improvement, as required by state law (O.C.G.A. § 20-14-33). The state uses four domains to determine schools’ Climate Star Rating: Attendance, Safe and Substance-Free (SSF) Environment, Discipline, and School Climate Survey.
In addition, Mary Persons High School received a 4.75 Climate Star Rating and Monroe County Middle School earned a 4.5 Climate Star Rating.
Dr. Jim Finch, Monroe County Schools Superintendent, says, “A huge thank you goes out to our students, teachers, administration, and staff who continue to put forth the highest quality of performance when it comes to school climate. These ratings are a testament to the leaders and teachers who set the tone for student learning every single day. Support staff such as paraprofessionals, clerical, custodians, nutrition workers and bus drivers are to be commended too. These workers do just as much in helping establish school culture and climate. I am proud to work alongside our employees who continue to create an environment where all students can learn, grow, and succeed.”

Bus drop off may be delayed this afternoon. A multi-vehicle accident shut down I-75 Southbound for several hours, causing congestion in town. The buses are rolling, but may take longer to get to your house this afternoon. Please be patient as our drivers work their way through the traffic.

For Immediate Release
On Thursday, March 26, 2026, Hubbard Elementary School administrators received a report of a 4th-grade substitute teacher watching adult explicit content on his personal digital device in the classroom. The administrators immediately began investigating this matter, and the substitute teacher was removed from the classroom. Hubbard administration also notified the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The substitute teacher spoke with the School Resource Officer as well as an MCSO deputy and was cooperative throughout both the school-level and MCSO investigation. The SRO did not see any evidence of the claim. The investigation subsequently moved to the Sheriff’s Office. The investigation involved multiple interviews and a digital forensics search of the device that lasted over multiple weeks. The substitute teacher continued to cooperate with authorities throughout the investigation. Earlier this week, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office notified Monroe County Schools that there was no evidence to support the original claims.
The school district takes these matters seriously. The district is appreciative of the support offered by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

For Immediate Release
This morning, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a Monroe County school bus driving erratically near Shi Road and Maynards Mill Road. According to MCSO, a deputy found the bus and noticed it was not maintaining its lane. There were no students on the bus. The deputy stopped the driver, and saw signs of possible impairment. The driver said he did not use drugs or alcohol. He refused to perform field sobriety tests, but did consent to a blood sample for further testing.
MCSO has identified the driver as 63-year-old man. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail.
Monroe County Schools is also investigating the incident. The bus driver had not yet started his morning route at the time he was stopped. Again, no students were on the bus.

On Friday, March 27, 2026, a T.G. Scott Elementary School staff member accidentally set off a Centegix lockdown at TGS and Monroe County Middle School. No students were in danger at any time. Because the two campuses are so close together, when one school locks down, the other is immediately locked down for student safety. Again, no students were in any danger.
If you have any questions, please contact administration at TG Scott Elementary, Monroe County Middle School, or Monroe County Schools central office.
