$PLO$T  @  WORK !

Your Sales Tax Pennies at Work

  What can a penny do?

Thanks to the support of the Monroe County community, a penny is building schools and classrooms, putting computers in front of our students, providing safe and secure learning environments, and much more.

The SPLOST for Education (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) - also called Education Local Option Sales Tax, or ELOST) -- was first approved by Monroe County voters in 1999 and was extended in 2004. Since 1999, SPLOST has provided more than $38 million in capital project funds for Monroe County Schools.

Current projects being funded through the SPLOST are construction of Katherine B. Sutton Elementary School and the newly completed gymnasium at Hubbard Middle School.

SPLOST dollars have also funded construction of T.G. Scott Elementary School, addition of classrooms and renovations at Mary Persons High School, Hubbard Elementary School and Hubbard Middle School, athletic and fine arts facilities for all schools, renovated the old Mary Persons Auditorium, and pumped more than two million dollars in computer hardware and network infrastructure into the classrooms.

All of these projects were planned and completed without any additional property tax for Monroe County residents.

SPLOST dollars can only be used for capitol projects. But having the funds available does allow the School Board to direct more of its General Fund dollars into instructional materials, supplies and highly-qualified teaching personnel. Plus, SPLOST dollars are paid by everyone who spends money in Monroe County - not just Monroe County residents.
